Luque Rojas is a federated climber and speleologist since 1992 within the
Espeleo Club Algeciras speleology group. It would be in this sporting
association where he would meet Lothar Bergmann, with whom he would share
friendship and the interest in rock art, which would lead to collaborate with
him in some of his research projects, such as the elaboration of the topography
of the Moro cave. This collaboration will be carried out at the direct request
of Lothar Bergmann after the discoveries of the Paleolithic engravings located
in the cited cave.
The different
publications performed by Lothar Bergmann in which these speleological topology
works would be included, allowed the professor of Prehistory of the UCA, José
Ramón Muñoz, to know his work, and to request in 2002 his collaboration as
speleologist in the realization of the new topographies of the archaeological
sites of Abrigo and the cave of Benzú de Ceuta.
The movie can
be divided into two parts: the documentary itself, and a wide range of extras
among which we can highlight a topography of the Moro cave, and seven prints
with images from the cave carried out by Lothar Bergmann. As well as a
biography of himself.
The interview
with Lothar Bergmann, German, speleologist and researcher who dedicated much of
his life to the discovery, cataloging and protection of rock art in the south
of the province of Cádiz, took place in July 2001. At that time, a filming team
moves to the archaeological site of the Algabes, located in Tarifa, to witness
a first informative meeting with Lothar Bergmann, who had co-founded the Gaditan
Association for the Study and Defense of the Archaeological Heritage (AGEDPA),
responsible for the defense and protection of the Southern Art, looking also
for this art to become part of the Unesco World Heritage list. The reason for
this interview that sees light in this report, would be made with the intention
of creating a report centered on rock art. This documentary would not finally
be accomplished, however, the interview performed to Lothar Bergmann, will
serve in this new documentary as the guiding thread on which the recording will
be built.
Along with the
interventions of Lothar Bergmann, recorded by Antonio Jesús Luque Rojas on site,
in which all the discoveries made by the protagonist will be mentioned, as well
as his struggle to get the support of the governmental institutions for the
protection and safeguard of the area, and his spreading work, the most detailed
professional analysis will be mixed, performed by the professor of Prehistory
of the University of Cádiz, José Ramón Muñoz, that will be enhancing the
important work achieved by Lothar Bergmann throughout his professional life as
speleologist in the south of the province of Cádiz. Culminating this
information with a series of different more personal and intimate stories of
his personal life shown by his widow.
Together with
these first-hand impressions about the work of Lothar Bergmann, the documentary
will make a tour of different sites, caves and shelters from the province of
Cádiz, such as the caves of Fontanilla, the Palmones site, the Estrella
shelter, Palomas cave, Laja Alta cave, or Arroyo cave. The comparative analysis
will as well take us through other places within the southern geography, such
as the Gorhan's Cave in Gibraltar, the Benzó cave in Ceuta, or the Ardales cave
in Málaga; all of them are considered reference items for the analysis of the rock
art so-called as Southern Art.
The documentary
will put the magnifying glass on the discovery and analysis of the Moro cave,
spearhead of Lothar Bergmann’s work, finding that would reinforce the previously
formulated hypothesis, but not demonstrated, that the south of the province of
Cádiz was part of the Mediterranean route of the Paleolithic art, and that manifested
similarly to those found in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, including the
Cantabrian manifestations. The discovery of this cave thanks to the tireless
work of Lothar Bergmann, will mark a milestone on the Southern Art, denomination
created by himself to designate all the manifestations of Paleolithic art
appeared in the south of the province of Cádiz, around to the area of the Tarifan Algarbes.
In conclusion, an
interesting work of approaching the general public, and researchers in
particular, to the professional and personal work of Lothar Bergmann, who would
mark a milestone in the area rock art research, leaving for further study a large
bibliographical collection after documenting dozens of new cavities and
shelters in the province of Cádiz. Likewise, it shows his important conservation
and divulgation task regarding the sites located both in Cádiz and in the rest
of the world, thanks to the creation of a website called Southern Art, where he
would digitally dump all his discoveries in images and topographies.
